Scottish Terriers - Origin

Since the history of Scottish terrier dogs has not been well documented until the late 1800s, there is a lot of speculation concerning the origin of the breed. Scottish Terrier dogs are believed to have originated in Scotland adding to the confusion of names. Like all terrier-like dogs that were developed in Scotland, they were called Scotch Terriers. Later, they were linked to Skye Terriers, a group of dogs endemic to the Isle of Skye.

Whatever the exact origin of the Scottish Terrier dog, the breed was used for hunting purposes. Like all terriers, the breed made a good ground dog capable of pursuing the otter, badger, rabbit, and other den animals. Good hunting instincts and small size allowed the breed to do the job perfectly. The short-legged, agile dogs became especially popular in the area of Aberdeen. Hence, the breed started to be called the Aberdeen Terrier.

However, a common name did not provide for common appearance and temperament characteristics within the breed because there was no sole standard. By the 1870s, it became particularly hard to distinguish Aberdeen Terriers from other dogs, which called for immediate response.

Scottish Terriers - Functions

By the 1880s, the first breed standard appeared allowing breeders to strive for an ideal. In the United States, the breed became popular in the beginning of the 20th century, yet experienced a decline after World War II. Nowadays, it is a watchdog and a family companion. Scottish Terrier dogs also excel in agility, ground trials, and obedience.
