Responsible breeders of Scottish Terrier dogs have more than once faced the problem of screening the breeding stock for hereditary diseases, particularly vWD (Canine von Willebrand's disease). Although this condition is present in other breeds as well, it is frequently seen in the Scottish Terrier dog with the gene frequency about 15 per cent of the breed population. The disease is rather dangerous as it may result in abnormal bleeding during spaying/neutering, injury, or other cases.
The situation is aggravated by the fact that the carriers of the abnormal gene do not always show the signs of the condition. So, the progeny of these dogs inherit the condition. To determine the presence of the gene, breeders have tried to use various tests. However, success was not achieved until a DNA test, which was developed at Michigan State University and the University of Michigan, turned out to be effective.
Nowadays, a DNA test is used to reveal the presence of the gene responsible for vWD in Scottish Terriers. Tested dogs are grouped as Affected, Carriers, or Clear. The test is simple and consists of taking a scrape from the inside of the dog's cheek and analyzing it in a lab. The results are usually ready in 2-4 weeks. It is also possible to perform the test in puppies before they go to the buyer's home.
Potential owners of the Scottish Terrier should ask for health certificates when buying a puppy. If the breeding stock has been DNA-tested and appears to be healthy, it is likely that the puppy that you buy is of good quality. It is also essential to determine the temperament of the puppy and ask a few questions concerning care and training Scottish Terrier dogs.
