Animals of this breed have a long, moderately wide, and slightly domed skull; these dogs are compact and well-muscled. The ears of the animals are sharply pricked; the nose is large; the eyes are small and deep-set. Like all dogs of this group, the Scottie is very protective, alert and hardy.

These animals coat is coarse with a soft dense undercoat, which protects the dog from cold climates. The common colors are wheaten, black, brindle and fawn, but any other color is acceptable. It is necessary to comb the animal twice a week; its coat should be professionally trimmed two times a year.
