Scottish Terrier dogs originated in Scotland and are now often depicted as the symbols of Scottish culture. These funny, yet courageous and devoted companions have a long history. Many Scottish Terrier owners insist that all other terriers originated from the Scottish Terrier dog. In fact, the history of the Scottish Terrier is not well documented until the 1800s. Many Americans came to know the breed when they first saw president Roosevelt's companion named Fala.

Scottish Terriers - Description

The first standard for the breed, that we know today as the Scottish Terrier dog, was coined in 1880. Nowadays, it is a short-legged dog, which is emphasized by a unique trim. The Scottish Terrier is a comparatively heavy-boned dog, yet it does not seem massive. On the contrary, the breed is agile and sporty.

Scottish Terriers come in black, wheaten, or brindle of any color. The coat is short and coarse and requires two to three brushing sessions a week. Scottish Terrier dogs are usually trimmed twice a year. Show dogs need more attention and time to keep the coat dazzling. Stripping is done to keep the coat tidy and contribute to the breed's funny appearance.

Scottish Terriers - Care Requirements

They are sporty dogs; yet they do not need a lot of exercise. The Scottish Terrier dog can be kept indoors and gets sufficient exercise with a few walks a day. However, a small yard is best for keeping the dog fit. Scottish Terriers enjoy playing. They make good companions for children however they are better suited for older, considerate children.

These dogs may be prone to a Canine von Willebrand's disease (vWD), Scottie Cramp, flea allergy, intervertebral disc disease, and other disorders. The breed sheds little to no hair, so regular combing and trimming are sufficient to keep the dog's coat neat. Scottish Terrier dogs need much affection and praise since they are sensitive and they thrive on love.
